I am delighted to introduce Iain Powell as the new manager of the

Paul Lawrie Foundation.

Read on to find out a bit more about him.

Give us a little bit of background.    Though I now live in Aberdeen I’m originally from Brora. I was brought up there overlooking the 12th tee at what I think is a fantastic traditional links course.

That explains the love of the game then. Where do you play these days?    I’m still a member at Brora but I’m also a member at Murcar Links where I try to play a couple of times a week.  I’m also a member of the Pennant team there which is a great way to get to play other courses.

How are you playing these days?    I’m playing of scratch just now and hopefully my handicap won’t go up in the new role.

Not bad. Have you won anything interesting on the back of that?    Well the Pennant Team I’m part of is a winning team and as an individual I’m most proud of having won the Clynelish Salver at Brora’s four day open and the James Braid Open a couple of times also at Brora. I am sure Paul is planning taking the odd £5 from me if we get a chance to play.

Any claims to fame or particular highlights?     Playing with five times Open champion Peter Thompson was definitely a highlight.

What do you bring to the Foundation ?    A background in the leisure industry [I worked in my family’s hotel business for many years] and a great network of contacts through my work at Dick Fleming’s will be great but my passion for golf is probably the most valuable thing for the Foundation.    I love playing and I’ve gained a lot from the game including good friends, a great network, fitness and now a new job so I’m determined to get as many people playing the game as possible so they can realise those benefits too.  Paul and Marian along with the help of Murray and Lynda have done a fantastic job building the Foundation to what it is now and I want to make sure of the continued success.

Anything else?    I’m a curler, too, and not a bad one at that.    I’m a member of the multi-winning Super League team which keeps me motivated and fit throughout the winter, bridging the gap nicely between the start and end of the golf season.   Having said that, my golf season doesn’t really end.    If weather permits, I’ll be out there on New Year’s Day.

If you want to speak to Iain about getting involved with the Foundation, or to find out about what’s in store this year, you can call him on 07919 330130 or iain@paullawriefoundation.co.uk
