Paul Lawrie Junior Match – Play Finals.
Ryan Bain, a 16-year-old member of the Strathlene club, Buckie, and 15-year-old Deeside member Megan Clyne won the individual titles at today's Paul Lawrie Foundation junior match-play semi-finals and finals at Banchory Golf Club.
Bain turned the form book upside down by beating the favourite, Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon), recent winner of the UBC boys' championship at Inverness, 2 and 1 in the final.
Ryan jumped into an early two-hole lead and was still two up at the turn. Dunton fought back well but couldn't find his range on the difficult greens and a first class match finished on the 17th green.
In an all-Deeside final, Megan Clyne beat Sophie Alexander by one hole. Sophie had won the first three holes but Megan got back on level terms at the 10th.
Clyne won the 12th and 13th to lead for the first time but Sophie won the 14th and 15th to square the tie. Clyne got her nose in front again by winning the 16th and the last two holes were halved.
Alexander's 20ft putt at the 18th to take final into extra holes lipped out.
Paul Lawrie Flag Finals and U16/18 Open 21/09/08
The largest event in the Paul Lawrie Calendar took place at Deeside Golf Club. 160 youngsters turned up on a glorious day to participate in the Flag Finals or the Open (or, in the case of a few very keen youngsters, both events!)
It was a real family event with lots of supporters turning up to encourage the youngsters, marvel at Paul’s golfing skills on the range and enjoy the hospitality of Deeside Golf Club.
The finals of the Flag Events were, as always, very fiercely contested and careful measuring was required at the end of the contests to ascertain the final winners. The golfing skills of all the youngsters have greatly improved over the season and their enthusiasm never fails to lift the spirits.
The U16/18 Open had added interest as it was the final event in the Order of Merit for the season. The winner of the Order of Merit was Alexander Wiseman from Fraserburgh. Alexander has had a great season and richly deserved his prize.
Ninety boys and girls competed in the U16/18 Open and there were several impressive performances. Jack Scott, in particular, must be congratulated on his outstanding gross score of 69! It was encouraging that a large number of the prize winners remained for the presentations. David, Jack and Alexander all made very gracious speeches acknowledging the support given to Junior Golf by Paul.
All the prize winners are listed below. See you next season!
