It was quite windy this morning but no rain for the first time this week which was nice , I shot 74 which was harsh as hit I it better today but struggled on the greens , I just can't seem to get going this year but still plenty of tournaments to play in so no panic just yet , home tonight then French open on Tuesday.
I got off to poor start again today with 3 putts at the first then short putts missed and poor shots at a few others meant I was +5 for the day after 12 holes. I played the last six holes in 4 under which was top effort to finish with one over today and two under overall. We had rain for most of the round which is unlucky but not much you can do. It was a very strange putting round today as I missed everything early then holed so many coming in but it was a great fight back today which is pleasing.
A huge "well done" to all the Dads of the 1999 PLF football team who have just completed the West Highland Way in a day......19 hours, 19 mins and 16 seconds!! Very proud of you all ..... on behalf of the Foundation and Adam can we say a massive thank you for your fundraising efforts.......very much appreciated by myself and Marian.
Woke up with sore lower back and groin this morning which bugged me all day so 70 was a good effort as I had to be careful. It was again breezy with some showers so 70 was decent, I am now -3 with nine under leading so all to play for at the weekend.
I got off to a terrible start today by three putting the first two greens but then putted quite nicely to shoot 71-1. We had quite a bit of rain and a stiff breeze so it was reasonably tough. Just as we were finishing the rain stopped and was quite nice which is typical!! The later starters have certainly had it easier but that can happen sometimes and normally works itself out over the year. I had a wee kip in the afternoon as I didn't sleep to good last night, so I feel better now.
I flew from Aberdeen to Dublin last night for this weeks Irish Open at Carton House which will be the third time we have played the tournament here. I played in the pro am this morning with three very nice amateurs which included top jockey Johnny Murtagh which was a good laugh. The course is in fantastic condition and it was a very nice calm morning perfect for scoring.
I was at PLGC all day for different meetings but I also managed to hit some balls. I focused on hitting with gloves under arms to flatten my swing as it had become at bit upright again.
I played 9 holes at PLGC with Laura Murray and Phillip McLean, we also managed to do some short game which was ideal.
I played at Sunningdale in an Aberdeen Asset Management golf day. It was a lovely day and the course as ever was superb.
I played the first 8 holes in level par today and probably should have been under par, then I hit it just left of 9th green and made triple bogey 6. I bogeyed the next three holes which was disappointing but that's the US Open for you.......... it's the toughest examination of the year. I finished with 77 to be +13 for the week and in 32nd position. Huge congrats to Justin Rose on winning this week, he has been very consistent for a long time now and so deserves to win a major. I fly to London tonight then stay there as I have Aberdeen Asset Management golf day at Sunningdale on Tuesday.
I played at 12 50pm today with Lee Westwood and Carl Peterson which was good as their both good lads. I shot 69-1 to finish +6 overall which is lying 16th. I hit it pretty solid all day and putted pretty good again. I had a great finish to my round by hitting 3 wood onto the 10th green and knocking in the 35 footer for an eagle.
We finished off our first round this morning at 7.15 am, unfortunately I finished double bogey, bogey to shoot 76 +6. We then had just over an hour before we started our second round .
I shot 71 in the second round to be +7 overall which should just about make the cut
I have been awarded an OBE for my work with our Foundation which is a lovely honour for me and everyone connected with the Foundation. I'm the one who gets all the credit but actually there are a lot of people who work very hard especially Marian, so I see it more for them than me.
There was a three and half hour delay to afternoon tee times because of more thunder and lightning. We eventually teed off at 4 10pm and we made it round to the 15th tee , I am +3 which is a joke as I have hit it really good and putted horrific. We re start tomorrow at 07 15am
I slept a bit better last night from 9pm - 3am which is good so felt better this morning. I played with Martin Laird, Russell Knox and Ryan Moore which was good fun. The course has dried out a lot since yesterday and actually played fast in places which is amazing. After lunch I was awarded the Tooting Bec Cup medal by Sandy Jones of the PGA which is given to the lowest round at the open by a PGA member which is nice. I chatted to Bob Rotella for an hour in the afternoon as I do whenever I play in America and I'm now back to hotel to relax for the afternoon.
I played the course this morning with Chris Doak , John Parry and Peter Hedblom, it is extremely wet in places which is understandable. The layout is very good with a strange mix of very tough holes and quite a few very short par 4s. The rough as you'd expect is brutal in places so hitting fairways as always in a US Open is very important.
I stayed at the Hilton last night as I flew from Glasgow first thing on Monday morning to Philidelphia with US Airways. It was raining when we arrived and has continued to rain non stop for hours. I will head up to the course first thing tomorrow morning.
I was at Banchory this morning to walk round with Michael who was playing in the 36 hole junior open, he shot 79 + 71 gross. The course was in very good condition especially the greens. It was nice to be back there as I have some good memories of my time there. I popped into Deeside for lunch and to see some of the kids playing in our stableford and flag events.... we had over 80 kids today which is great. Craig was down playing at Prestwick today for the North East team who were competing in the area boys championships. They did really well finishing 2nd with Craig shooting -2 in the afternoon. Well done boys top effort! I drove down to Glasgow tonight to stay at the Hilton before flying to Philadelphia tomorrow morning for next weeks US Open which I'm really looking forward to.
Last night I was at Newburgh on Ythan golf club to play a 9 hole exhibition match to celebrate their 125th anniversary. It was a lovely night with quite a few people out to watch, after the golf we had a q&a session in the clubhouse which was good fun all the proceeds were split between my Foundation and Newburgh golf club. Huge thanks to everyone involved in organising it and to everyone who came out to watch.... I hope you enjoyed it, I certainly did.
16 fathers from our 1999 PLF boys football team are running the West Highland Way in a day to raise money for the Foundation and Leukaemia Research Beatson where my pal and coach Adam Hunter was treated Please try and give them a donation, thank you.......
I had interviews with Press & Journal and Northsound to preview the US Open and Scottish Open yesterday morning then I met Alan Duncan from Intermoor who ordered some PL collection. Marian and I met Brian and Audrey Morrison for lunch at PLGC then Brian also ordered some PLC
I popped over to pick up Michael and Benjamin Henderson from Murcar where Michael won the PLF Aberdeen schools stroke play championship which is really cool.......... well done pal
It was our Foundation sponsors day at Trump International today where each sponsor was invited along with a guest. I watched everyone tee off from the first and also the thirteenth then gave a short game clinic after the prize giving. Huge thanks to everyone for attending and of course for your massive support to our Foundation.... Marian and I really appreciated all you do for us.
I played at Loch Lomond this morning with Stevie Gallacher, Andrew Forsyth and Ali Chalmers who bought the round at our Foundation dinner last year with Stevie and I splitting it between our Foundations. The weather was amazing and we all had a great day and the course was in very good condition. Unfortunately myself and Andrew were turned over by the other two with both of us struggling a bit ( well Andrew did. Lol ) Huge thanks to Ali and Andrew for buying the round.
There was hardly any wind today and the greens were soft and rolling very well so scoring was always going to be low. I shot 69 -3 and dropped a few spots on the board. It was a bit of a frustrating day on the greens as I hit some lovely putts that didn't drop but overall this week has seen a load of positives. I led the putts per green hit stat this week and was 6th in puttts per round, so a huge improvement there and it shows I'm on the right road with the putter. I fly to Edinburgh tonight and Mrs L is coming down to pick me up.
Nice little 68 this morning which probably should have been a few less as gave away shots at 7+8 and made double bogey at 17 again!!!!! But a lot of positives from this week so its all good folks.
