I have been hitting quite a few a balls at PLGC and hitting hundreds of putts at home. This morning I was over at one of my sponsors Pentagon Feight for a coffee and to sign some of my books for their staff and customers. As always Keith Park (caddie of the year) looked after me well and even had chocolate biscuits. We watched the Aberdeen v St Johnstone game last night which was a disappointing result.
I was back at Jumeirah Golf Estates today for a Pentagon Freight golf day where I gave a clinic in the morning then played 1 hole with each group on the Earth course in the afternoon. It was a lovely hot day with just a little breeze, the course was in fantastic condition and everyone had a good laugh. I fly home tonight through Heathrow. Cana wait......been away three weeks.
I flew from Doha to Dubai on Friday lunchtime as I have a Pentagon golf day on Sunday at Jumeirah Golf Estates. I went up today to Jumeirah to practice all day which went well. The bottom end of the range is a fantastic place to work on your game. Thanks to Wayne and all the staff for looking after me.
I hit it fantastic today but probably the worst putting display ever. 34 putts for 72 is horrendous but the good news is my ball stricking was awesome and I could easily have shot 8 or 9 under but I missed the cut by one. Quite unbelievable but that's what it was.
I hit it good this morning and chipped well the few times I had to but holed no putts again (32) to finish with 72 level par. I played with Ernie Els also 72 and Sergio Garcia 69 which was good fun.
I played at 07.10am in the pro am this morning which was tough as I didn't get to the hotel last night until around midnight but after a few coffees I was good to go. The course is in good condition as always and its great to be back. I had a quick nap in the afternoon then headed to the mall for a while.
I played at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in a Saltire Energy golf day. I did a short game clinic in the morning then played 3 holes with each group. It was a lovely sunny day and was great fun. Huge thanks to Gary and Paul from Saltire and all the golf club staff for looking after us so well.
I hit it really good on the front nine but holed nothing to turn in level par then struggled a bit on back nine but managed to finish with a birdie to shoot 72 to finish level par overall. This week the course was set up pretty tough and I didn't hit it quite as well as last week but its only the second week of the season so no problem. I'm staying in Abu Dhabi tonight as I have a Saltire Energy golf day tomorrow.
I hit it really poorly the front nine but thankfully my short game was sharp and only turned in one over with a three putt from 10 feet at 8th. Then I hit some really nice shots on back nine to shoot 71 -1 which leaves me at level par total for the tournament. It was again a lovely warm day with very little wind so scoring was good. I'm just back from the gym where I also went yesterday.......trying to shift a bit of weight.
Little better with the putter today but only slightly. Shot 71 to be one over total which should make the weekend. After a quick bite to eat I headed onto the putting green for a while. Davy thought my backswing was a little inside which makes sense as I've been pushing a lot of putts so I worked on getting it straight back straight through which will hopefully be better. Lovely calm warm day.
Welcome on board Intermoor, my new left sleeve sponsor
Pretty much the same as last week, hit it good but holed absolutely nothing and it took us 4 hours 50 mins to play which is a disgrace.
I decided to put my name in the hat for the Ryder Cup captaincy which was picked last night. I didn't get it but there was no harm in trying as its not a job anyone would turn down. Huge congrats to Paul McGinley on getting the job, I'm sure he will be a fantastic captain at Gleneagles and I hope to be in his team.
This morning I met with John Huggan for his Scotland on Sunday article and then I played in the pro am which was pretty breezy but good. The course is excellent with the greens rolling pure. I play at 11 55am tomorrow with Peter Hanson and Padraig Harrington so should be cool.
Flight from Durban to Dubai was pretty bumpy so didn't get much sleep so decided to have a lazy day in the hotel yesterday. Today I was up at the course most of the day hitting balls and playing a few holes. The course has changed dramatically since I played here with the kids over christmas as it was wet and slow but greens were a lovely speed and quite firm today. I'm just back from the players meeting in the hotel.
Hit it the best of the week today but 33 putts is five to many in this company but shot 69 to finish -10 and in a tie for 7th which considering the amount of missed putts is a really good effort for the first week of the year. I led the greens in regulation stats this week but finished last in putting I didn't putt poorly just didn't hole many...... that can happen. I fly to Dubai tonight with Emirates then I get a car to take me to Abu Dhabi for next weeks HSBC Abu Dhabi Championship which should be good.
Hit it lovely today but missed a lot of putts which is frustrating but part of the game. It was quite breezy again and we also had some heavy rain for the last three holes which made it tricky. I am now in a tie for 7th eight shots behind Scott Jamieson.
Pretty much the same as yesterday in relation to greens hit etc but probably played a little better than yesterday and hit some lovely putts that just missed. We played with one of the Volvo guests today who had qualified from thousands of entrants, it must be tough to play one round with tour pros in front of galleries but Carl played nicely and seemed to enjoy his day. We had a short delay this morning as heavy overnight rain had flooded the course but when we started the course was good and greens still pretty firm. We had a couple of heavy showers but overall it was ok. I shot 70 to be -5 overall in a tie for 4th nice weekend required.
I teed off at 11 50am with Colin Montgomerie, it was much cooler and very breezy. I struggled on the 8th making a double bogey 7 hitting two poor shots on the one hole to be out in +2. I hit it lovely on the back nine making 5 birdies which included a very close hole in one at the 15th. We also had some heavy rain for the last three holes so it was an interesting day all round but overall it was a very good start to 2013.
I met Martin Dempster from the Scotsman this morning for an interview then we played the pro am at 12 30pm. The course is quite short but very tight off the tees but I would imagine scoring will be very low this week as there are loads of chances. It was very hot and humid. I play with Colin Montgomerie tomorrow at 11 50am which will as always be interesting
I met Graeme Webster from team niblick design to sign the contract for our new short game area at PLGC we also had a walk around as I wanted some mounding around it. I flew at 3 15pm to Heathrow then jJoburg and finally arriving into Durban on Tuesday morning. The London to Joburg part was 2 hours late which meant missing our connection but we got the later one. The hotel this week is very nice and is right beside the sea with fantastic views.
We all had a great time on holiday at the Jebel Ali hotel in Dubai especially as I won the golf this year which I think is the first time that has happened. We arrived home last night so we were all up pretty early this morning especially Marian who was up at 4am. I had an appointment with Gillian Mitchell this morning who I forgot to mention in my book (shocking) as we have worked together for 10 years now. Very sorry…………. Gillian, I knew I would forget someone and you were the one. I also hit a few balls and hoovered the downstairs and shop much to the surprise of quite a few. We nipped over to deeside golf club for tea.
