It was our Foundation dinner at the Marcliffe on Monday night which will be the last one held there due to Mr Spence retiring and the hotel closing , Stewart Spence has been unbelievable for Marian and I ever since we first met in the early 90s so we presented him with a rose gold Panerai watch to thank him for all he's done for us and the Foundation over the years , I think he was speechless for the first time in history !! , Richard Gordon was again our MC with Craig Brown and myself speaking with Alex Fleming doing the auction , it was again a great night huge thanks to all our table sponsors and of course all the staff at the Marcliffe for another wonderful meal I have managed to hit quite a few balls this week which has been really good and is starting to feel as though things will improve
Got off to a lovely start by hitting two drivers onto first green and making a birdie but a flyer at the second and poor iron shots at the 5th and 7th for bogies meant I turned in +2 which was not exactly what I had in mind , I drove the ball magnificent today hitting 12/14 fairways but irons were poor and holed nothing all day which meant I shot 74+2 which is disappointing but still quite a few positives from this week , I finished in a tie for 23rd which considering I wasn't sure if I could play on Wednesday evening really wasn't too bad , I get home tonight through Frankfurt
It was quite a struggle with ball striking today so my 71-1 was a very good effort I thought , There was also a little bit more wind which made it tricky , apart from the double bogey at the 13th I couldn't have been a shot less today attitude was very good and scrambled very well
Poor result for AFC today away to St Johnstone but its early season yet
It was very steady today with two birdies and no bogeys , I hit 16 greens in regulation but very few of them were close enough to give me good chances of birdies , I shot 70-2 again to be four under overall and In a decent position heading into the weekend.
We had a one hour delay this morning for lightning but once the storm passed it was a pretty nice day , I shot 70-2 which considering my back was pretty stiff I thought it was a good effort , I didn't hit many fairways but was in play pretty much all day , all the work on my putting is starting to pay off as again today I rolled the ball lovely. The course this week is pretty good but too much rough around the greens makes it a hit and hope which is a pity but overall its a very nice venue.
We had our first foundation junior pro am today at Peterculter, David Law, Kris Nicol, Jordan Findlay ,Phillip McLean and ma loon Craig each played with three juniors from the host club. On-course help with course management is something I'm keen for juniors to learn more about which was the reason for the pro ams, all the kids enjoyed it and with more planned for later in the year the idea will hopefully grow
My flight was 05 35am this morning which is a ridiculous time to fly really but it meant I got to Prague by lunchtime
I played at 8 30am this morning with three very nice local chaps who were good fun and all decent golfers. My back has certainly improved but still feels pretty sore when I'm hitting driver so will just need to pop some pills and man up !!!!
I was at Murcar Links today to watch Michael play for Deeside in the PL Foundation sponsored "Off the Tee" competition , its a four man team playing foresomes , Deeside played Peterculter in the morning winning by 7 holes overall , they were up against Peterhead in the final who got a bye in the semi final as the Newmachar team didn't turn up !! Deeside played very well winning by 8 holes overall , Michael was joined by Benjamin Henderson, Lewis Anderson and Connor Forbes, well done lads good effort.
I then had an appointment with the cruncher Gillian Mitchell to sort out my back which was actually much better today.
I had to pull out this morning as my back hadn't recovered enough, it felt ok with short irons but as soon as I tried to hit the woods it was hopeless , injuries are part and parcel of sports but it's very frustrating when they happen , I flew to Newcastle last night to watch Craig play his final round of Euro pro event at Slaley Hall , he struggled a bit with ball striking but his short game and putting were sharp and shot 71-1 to finish in a tie for 23rd which will be good for his confidence. It's very early days for him but he's getting there and enjoying what he's doing , we both flew home on Eastern Airways which only had 4 passengers in total on board which was strange. I will be taking it easy this weekend to see if I'm fit for next week.
Craig and I drove down to Loch Lomond this morning for a game with Davy Kenny and my sports psychologist John Mathers , we played the front nine with John giving us some games to work on which was really good , my attitude has been poor for a while so I'll be seeing a bit more of John
Craig and I went to Pittodrie to watch Aberdeen v Dundee United which was a poor result with Utd winning very easily 3-0 , Utd played well but Aberdeen were as poor as I've seen them for a long time but its only the first game of the season and they had played a game on the Thursday night
I flew to Aalborg via Amsterdam yesterday for this weeks event "Made in Denmark" , I felt my back stiffen up on the flights yesterday so it was no surprise when I woke this morning and struggled to get dressed, I only hit 5 balls on the range and after seeing the tour physios it was obvious I couldn't play in the morning shot gun pro am which is very frustrating as I've been doing a load of work and felt the best I have in ages , but hopefully it will be ok for tomorrow
I played in the celebrity pro am today at Nailcott Hall in Birmingham with Farmfoods chairman Eric Herd as well as Eric's daughter Sarah and Sarah's boyfriend Chris which was good fun , it was my first time playing the course which is very tricky but good fun
My amateur partner this week is youngest Lawrie Michael we played today with Craig and his partner Michael MacDougall , I shot 56+2 which wasn't very good but the course is not that easy , Michael and I were 53-1
To have any chance of winning I needed to go very low so to shoot 46-8 which was a new course record was very nice but unfortunately it was 1 shot too many for the play off which was won by Eddie Pepperell. Michael and I shot 43-11 together with Michael playing lovely. Eric Herd also owns a few sit down fish and chip restaurants called the "Finest Catch" which we all went to tonight which was lovely. We have all really enjoyed the week....... massive thanks to everyone involved especially Eric Herd of Farmfoods who looked after us all brilliantly.
I hit some balls at PLGC this morning then headed down to Stirling to see my sports psychologist John Mathers , I need to start seeing him a bit more often as he's very good and making a difference. We are off to the Farmfoods British par 3 event tomorrow which will be great fun.
Marian, Michael and I went to Union Square this morning then up to Cove to visit my Mum for a cup of tea , Michael played in the medal at Deeside and shot 72 -2 70 so got .1 off , Craig and I played 13 holes also at Deeside then we all had bite to eat. I was following the final of the Scottish amateur on twitter , massive congrats to Chris Robb who beat Graeme Robertson in the final at Downfield fantastic achievement.
It was the Ellon pro am today where I played with Michael Macdougall , Sam Locke and Adam Fisher who are two of our foundation team for this year , I hit it good again but struggled on the greens but shot 65-5 to finish second behind Chris Kelly. It was good fun like yesterday , I have really enjoyed the last two days and it was good to shoot some birdies , both courses were in very good condition and food / organisation etc was first class. Huge thanks to everyone.
I played in the Saltire Energy Deeside pro am today with Michael MacDougall , Alan Reid and my father in law Bert which was great fun , I shot 63-7 to win by one shot which was nice.
